| This course has been
designed to provide participants with an understanding of common health care related
hazards. Participants in this course will gain an understanding of the hazards commonly
encountered in health care settings. Course topics include: public-workplace encounters
(violence in the workplace and working alone), issues in construction, building
maintenance issues (including asbestos, mould, work-at-height, and indoor air quality),
chemical safety (including toxic materials, sterilants and disinfectants, compressed
gases, and anesthetic gases and vapours), laboratory safety, ergonomics, biohazardous
agents, radiation, laser safety, heat, noise, and housekeeping issues. This course meets
the mandated requirements set out by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Boards
(WSIBs) Certification Training Program Standard. Note: Joint Health and Safety Committee Member
Certification is a 2-step process requiring successful completion of Part 1 (Basic) and
Part 2 (Workplace-Specific or Sector-Specific Hazard Training). Employers of participants
seeking Part 2 Certification are expected to conduct a hazard assessment to determine the
"significant hazards" present at their workplace and to train prospective
certified member in those hazards. Upon completion of training, participants must submit a
completed copy of the Workplace Specific Hazard Training Confirmation Form (#3189A) to
WSIB for final certification.
