U.S. Department of labour (OSHA) Announces Ergonomics Plan

In January 2001, the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enacted an Ergonomics Program Standard that required employers to address ergonomics hazards in the workplace. However, on March 20, 2001, the standard was repealed. Then, earlier
this month, OSHA announced a new Comprehensive Plan on Ergonomics that is designed to “reduce ergonomic injuries in the shortest possible time frame”, “prevent ergonomics injuries before they occur", and "reach a much larger number of at-risk workers”. The Plan consists of four elements: Guidelines, Enforcement, Outreach and Assistance, and Research. Draft guidelines are currently under development and are expectd to be released later this year. OSHA currently has ergonomics e-tools on their website that may be helpful for your workplace.

In the asbsence of an ISO standard to occupational health and safety management systems, progressive employers around the globe have been adopting British Standards Insitute OHSAS 18001 - The Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Specifciation. In response, REA has developed two courses designed to help employers wishing to adopt this OHS Management System:
  • OHSAS 18001 - 1-day Awareness Course
  • OHSAS 18001 - 3-day Implementation Course

The 1-day Awareness Course is designed for participants who would like to find out if OHSAS is a management system that would benefit their workplace. The course provides an overview of OHSAS 18001 requirements - OHS management system elements, general requirements, OH policy, planning, implementation and operation, checking and corrective action, and management review - and by the end of the course understand the intent, content, and applicability of this management system.

The 3-day Implementation Course will provide those participants who have decided to implement OHSAS 18001 the tools and knowledge to effectively assess / develop / consolidate their existing management system to conform with OHSAS 18001. In addition to covering the essentials of the specification, participants will understand practical ways of integrating OHSAS 18001 with Canadian Occupational Health and Safety statutory and regulatory requirements, and the relationship between OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 is also covered.
