This course addresses the following topics:

• Introduction and scope of the OHSAS 18001 specification document
• Accreditation, Registration and Auditing
• A framework for OHSAS 18001 implementation
• Detailed examination of the five key elements of OHSAS 18001
• Assessment of actual OH&S Management

• are not occupational hygiene specialists (this is not an exam preparation or review course); but
• have responsibilities for occupational hygiene issues in their organizations, or for monitoring or enforcement of occupational hygiene conditions in workplaces; and
• want a good understanding of occupational hygiene principles, methods, technologies, standards, and the marketplace (with emphasis on exposure assessment, selected aspects of ventilation, and respiratory protection); and
• want to develop basic skills in the use of occupational hygiene instrumentation; and
• want the ability to competently manage common occupational hygiene investigations.

• Have the ability to recognize, and describe appropriate courses of action to address several common occupational hygiene issues and problems.
• Understand, and be able to use, a set of decision-logic diagrams for identification, evaluation and control of a number of common industrial hygiene scenarios.
• Be able to calibrate and use basic integrative and direct reading air sampling and noise monitoring instrumentation.
• Know how to select and obtain direct reading air sampling instrumentation for common chemical contaminants.
• Understand the principles and methods for calculating human inhalation exposures to chemical agents and comparing exposures against exposure standards and limits.
• Use simple occupational hygiene formulae, tables, and figures.
• Understand the regulatory requirements in Ontario pertaining to identification, evaluation and control of workplace exposures to chemical and physical agents.
• Be familiar with ACGIH exposure standards and standards-setting processes.
• Be able to gather information and make observations in order to complete a basic design evaluation checklist for common industrial local exhaust ventilation applications.
• Be familiar with the range of occupational hygiene resources.
• Be a well informed consumer of occupational hygiene specialist resources and services.
• Know where and how to rent and purchase occupational hygiene equipment, supplies and services, and prices.
