| UPDATE: Legislative Bodies in B.C. and Alberta |
|
WorkSafe Website
WCB of BC has made some minor modifications to their website yet again. When you visit
www.worksafebc.com, you will notice that there is a great deal more colour used and it is
more user-friendly than the previous version. Also, recent revisions to the Occupational
Health and Safety Regulations are now posted on the web. If you have a few minutes to
spare, log onto their website and see for yourself!. Recommended Changes to B.C.
Legislation
The following information is a summary of some of the recommended changes to the
Occupational Health and Safety legislation in BC as presented recently by Ms. Lorna
Pawluk, Barrister & Solicitor:
Occupational Disease the causative significance of the disease
will remain; however, the benefits will be based on the percentage of work causes vs.
non-work causes. In addition, there are plans for four levels of entitlement according to
the extent of the occupational disease.
Right to Refuse Unsafe Work will now be entrenched in the WCA similar to
other jurisdictions
OHS Regulations to avoid potential conflict of interest, any future proposed
changes to the Regulations must be approved by Cabinet and not the WCB.
Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
Just a quick reminder that Alberta is planning on making major changes to the Occupational
Health and Safety Regulations later on this year. To obtain hard copies of the new
Regulations, you should contact Alberta Queens Printer. The Queens Printer
recently moved and is now located at 602, 620 7th Avenue SW in the John J. Bowlen
Building. They can be reached at 403-297-6251 or at qp@gov.ab.ca.

| Encasement: A New Method of Asbestos Control |
|
| For those buildings that have sprayed-on asbestos
insulation, there is a new alternative asbestos control method gaining popularity in North
America encasement. Encasement is the application of a semi-solid
polymer over the existing asbestos substrate (basically, an insulation for the
fireproofing). It is a two-phase application process where 1) primer is applied and 2) 24
hours later, a top-coat layer is sprayed. The unique chemical properties of the encasement
material allows the top-coat to bind to the primer thereby creating a much stronger
substrate than traditional encapsulants. In addition, there are numerous other advantages
of encasement over existing asbestos control methods. Some of these advantages are a)
fireproofing of the building is retained, b) more cost-efficient than abatement, c)
encasement material is non-toxic, d) it has a long life span and, e) it is a simple
application method. To learn more, contact Alex
Safronsky or Vince Germanese at REA. |
