New WCB Notice of Project Forms
WCB of BC has recently replaced the six Notice of Project (NOP) forms with two new ones:
Form 52E49 - NOP: Construction, Asbestos, Lead
Form 53E48 - NOP: Forestry, Aircraft, Diving, Underground Workings
This will eliminate much of the duplicate general information that employers have to complete if there is more than one type of NOP required. Go to http://www.worksafebc.com and click on "Forms" to obtain copies.

Alberta's Regulatory Review Process
Alberta's Radiation Protection Regulation is currently under review. Visit http://www3.gov.ab.ca/hre/whs/law/pdf/rpr_proposal.pdf for a copy of the draft Regulatory Proposal. Some of the proposed changes include:

  • Both the owner of radiation equipment or source(s) and the employer are responsible for keeping workers' exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
  • Speficies that a dosimeter must be used for personal monitoring.
  • A new requirement that only those 18 years of age or older are allowed to work with radiation.

If you would like to participate or have comments about the review process, you can fax the Chair of the Radiation Protection Regulatory Review Task Force at 780-422-0014.

Is "Encasement" for you?
Do you have mould in your building? Do you have asbestos fire-proofing and/or lead-based paint in your facility? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, then perhaps you may want to consider encasement. “Encasement” is an enclosure membrane formed by the application of a non-toxic, acrylic polymer. The end result is a thick, durable unitary membrane that is elastic, not rigid. Thus, both asbestos fibres and lead-based paint will be contained within the membrane and will not be an exposure hazard. With respect to mould, the encasement material naturally inhibits the growth of mould and mildew. Another advantage is that encasement is significantly less expensive than abatement and, additionally, carries a limited warranty of 20 years. To learn more about encasement technology and its prior use in Canada, contact Alex Safronsky or Vince Germanese.

In the asbsence of an ISO standard to occupational health and safety management systems, progressive employers around the globe have been adopting British Standards Insitute OHSAS 18001 - The Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Specifciation. In response, REA has developed two courses designed to help employers wishing to adopt this OHS Management System:
  • OHSAS 18001 - 1-day Awareness Course
  • OHSAS 18001 - 3-day Implementation Course

The 1-day Awareness Course is designed for participants who would like to find out if OHSAS is a management system that would benefit their workplace. The course provides an overview of OHSAS 18001 requirements - OHS management system elements, general requirements, OH policy, planning, implementation and operation, checking and corrective action, and management review - and by the end of the course understand the intent, content, and applicability of this management system.

The 3-day Implementation Course will provide those participants who have decided to implement OHSAS 18001 the tools and knowledge to effectively assess / develop / consolidate their existing management system to conform with OHSAS 18001. In addition to covering the essentials of the specification, participants will understand practical ways of integrating OHSAS 18001 with Canadian Occupational Health and Safety statutory and regulatory requirements, and the relationship between OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 is also covered.
